The Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) is a points-tested permanent residency visa for highly skilled professionals who can migrate to Australia without needing an employer, sponsor, or nomination. Applicants submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect and receive an invitation based on their points, occupation demand, and ranking in the pool.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the Subclass 189 visa, you must:

  • Receive an invitation to apply
  • Be under 45 at the time of invitation
  • Have a positive skills assessment for an occupation on the MLTSSL
  • Score 65+ points (higher scores usually receive invitations faster)
  • Have at least Competent English
  • Meet health and character requirements

Submit your EOI in SkillSelect. EOIs remain active for 2 years.

Step 4

Receive Invitation

Invitations are issued periodically based on occupation demand and points ranking.

Apply for Visa

You must apply within 60 days of receiving the invitation.

Wait for Processing

Typical processing time:
50% in 5 months
90% in 5 months

Step 7

Visa Decision

If approved, you receive a permanent residency grant letter with full PR rights.
